Senior Capstone
Metamorphosis Reading: A story of change through tarot cards
DESCRIPTION
My senior year of college what I expected it to be. In the beginning of my final semester, it was decided that my senior class’s capstone project would be to create a work of art for an exhibition hosted by Womanswork.Art in Poughkeepsie, NY. When the COVID crisis closed campuses all across the country, we had to change our exhibition to be held online. We were able to keep our original exhibition theme, transformation and metamorphosis, and with that theme I decided to tell a narrative using tarot cards.
THE NARRATIVE
I wanted to tell a story of my coming into my own in college, growing from a very scared and awkward child into someone who was ready to adapt and face fear head on.
THE TOWER
The Tower card represents chaotic and unavoidable change. This card design depicts me as a young child battling debilitating anxiety. Without the tools and perspective I have now, every change back then was terrifying, and transformation was a terrifying concept to me
DEATH
Though Death is a feared card, it does not have a negative meaning. In fact, it is entirely neutral. It simply means the end of one thing, and the beginning of something new. In this card, I wanted to show a moment where I decided to take the step to change for the better. I embraced the possibility of a future, and began a metamorphoses into adulthood.
WHEEL OF FORTUNE
The final card in this series is the Wheel of Fortune. It represents good things to come in the future, but is also the card of karma and cyclical change. The sleeping demon represents that trouble will come back around, but so will good fortune, because that is the nature of change. This design shows me as I am now, a young adult taking my fortune into my own hands. Even through chaotic moments, like the COVID pandemic, I— and anyone else— can get through it to the good
